Daily Reflection on the Gospel of Sunday, August 31, 2025
Today, Jesus teaches us a masterly lesson: do not choose the best seat: «When you are invited to a wedding party, do not choose the best seat» (Lk 14:8). Español | English

Today, Jesus teaches us a masterly lesson: do not choose the best seat: «When you are invited to a wedding party, do not choose the best seat» (Lk 14:8). Español | English
Today, we contemplate the parable of the Talents. Here, we can appreciate something like a change of style in Jesus' message: the announcement of the Kingdom is no longer limited to point out its nearness but to the description of its contents through stories: it is the time of the parables! Today, Friday, 21st week in ordinary time, the Lord, in the Gospel, reminds us of the convenience of staying always awake and ready to meet him. Español | English
Hoday, the evangelic text speaks of the uncertainty of the moment when the Lord will come: «You do not know on what day your Lord will come» (Mt 24:42). Español | English
Today, as in previous days, and in others to follow, we contemplate Jesus, beside oneself, condemning those attitudes incompatible with a dignified and decent life, not only Christian but also human: «You appear as religious to others, but you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness within» (Mt 23:28). Español | English
Today, Jesus assumes a clear attitude of diatribe: «Woe to you (...)! Woe to you (...)!» (Mt 23:23-25). His objectives are the scribes and the Pharisees, who represent the powerful class exerting a spiritual and moral influence over people. Español | English
Today, the Lord wants to enlighten us about a concept which, being elementary per se, very few succeed in assimilating it in depth: guiding someone towards disaster is not to guide towards life but towards death. Español | English
Today, the Gospel raises the theme of the salvation for our souls. This is the essence of Christ’s message and the “supreme law of the Church” (in fact, this is also mentioned like that by the very Code of Canon Law). Español | English
Today, more than ever before, we have to work for our personal and collective salvation, as Saint Paul states, with regard and significance, for «now is the day of salvation» (2Co 6:2). Español | English
Today, a teacher of the law ask Jesus «Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the Law?» (Mt 22:36), the most important one is the first commandment. Español | English
Today, the evangelic parable speaks of the banquet of the Kingdom. It is a recurrent example in Jesus' preaching. It has to do with that wedding feast that will happen at the end of time and that will be the union of Jesus with his Church. Español | English
Today, God's Word invites us to realize that divine “logic” goes beyond merely human logic. While we, men, calculate («they thought they would receive more»: Mt 20:10) Español | English
Today, we contemplate the reaction provoked by the dialogue of Jesus with the rich young man: «Who, then, can be saved?» (Mt 19:25). Español | English
Today, the liturgy of the Word submits to our consideration the famous passage of the rich young man, that young man that did not succeed in reacting to the eye-beaming look Jesus Christ cast at him (cf. Mk 10:21). Español | English
Today, -from Jesus' very lips- we can hear the frightening avowal: «I have come to bring fire upon the earth» (Lk 12:49); «Do you think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you» (Lk 12:51). Español | English
Today, we are given to contemplate a scene that, unfortunately, is a very real one now-a-days: «Little children were brought to Jesus that He might lay his hands on them with a prayer. Español | English
Today, we celebrate the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in body and soul to Heaven. «Today —St. Bernard says— the Virgin, full of glory, is taken up to heaven, showering the celestials beings with joy». Español | English
Today, asking «how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister?» (Mt 18:21) Español | English
Today, in this brief evangelic fragment, the Lord teaches us three frequently ignored but important ways to proceed.
Today, once more, the Gospel reveals to us God's heart. It gives us to understand the feelings the Father in Heaven reacts with, in relation to his children. Español | English
Today, the liturgy offers, for us to consider, different possibilities. Amongst these we could, perhaps, stop in something implicit throughout the text: Jesus' familiar attitude with his disciples. Español | English
Today, the Gospel reminds us and demands from us to be always wide-awake «for the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect» (Lk 12:40). Español | English

Today, the Gospel clearly confronts us with the world... It is absolutely radical in its approach, and it does not admit any half measures: «If you want to follow me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me» (Mt 16:24). Español | English
